Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

Running Windows 7 x64 retail with IETester v0.4.2.

IE6 and IE5.5 tabs crash instantly upon opening.

I've tried running IETester as admin and didn't help. This is a clean install of Windows 7... the only things I have installed are Outlook 2007, and FireFox.

Anybody have a fix?

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

Unfortunately, I don't have an x64 OS installed so I cannot debug on this platform.

Win7 x64 home premium, I'm able to load a page once, then it'll crash, and won't reopen.

I'd be happy to send you my debug logs or whatever would be helpful if you tell me how.

Thanks for the proposition, but I don't think it will be enough to correct the problems with x64 platform.

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

Update:

I forgot to mention that I'm running this all on VMWare Fusion on my iMac.

I tried installing Windows 7 x86 on a new virtual machine, and IETester is doing the same thing... So maybe it's not a problem with x64.

I thought IETester is working in Windows 7 though... Is anybody else using VMWare with W7 and IETester?

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

IE6 and IE5.5 are working on my Win7 x86 machine. Did you have a fresh Win7 install ? or did you install some IE add-ons, or visual studio, or some other dev tools ?

No this is on a fresh Win7 retail install, with IETester being literally the only thing I have installed. Is VMWare the problem?

Oh and I haven't installed VMWare Tools yet either. I did have them installed on the x64 machine though.

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

Hi,

I'm a webdesigner - developer and IEtester is a realy nice tool to evaluate my work in multiple versions of IE.

I have always runned this software on a Windows Vista Home Premium x64 machine, but now I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Retail) and I also have problems with the IE5,5 and IE6 tabs.

1 second after opening a IE5.5 or IE6 tab, I always get the error : A tab has crashed for an unknown reason. You can reopen the tab by clicking the "Reopen tab" button. When i click that button, the tab reopens, but immediately crashes again.

I have tried to Run the software as Administrator but I still have the same issue.

Is there a solution for this please?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

IETester uses jsproxy.dll library if you enabled proxy in Internet Options(Internet Explorer settings). But this library in Win7 is the new version made for IE8, and old IE (5.5, 6.0, 7.0) can't use it properly.
This is why tabs crash instantly upon opening.

Solution is simple: directly from IETester you can open IE Settings (Internet Options -> Connections  tab -> LAN Settings) and switch off proxy

I just tried this, but it didn't work for me. My proxy was already disabled so I tried toggling it on and off, but still no change.

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

If you are running Windows, here is a workaround that you may want to try/think about.  I have IETester installed on a Virtual machine runnning XP SP3 (and a Vista as well) that are running IE8.  If you install IETester on one of those Virtual PC machines, you should be good to go.

How to:

1. Download Virtual PC 2004 SP1 - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en
2. Download your choice of Virtual PC image - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en
3. Run the image and then load it into Virtual PC.

This works for me.  You can also run these images in Virtual Box as well.  I haven't done this myself, but there you go.  And just so that you know, Microsoft has released Virtual PC 2004 SP1 as a "free" application to facilitate the testing of IE6.  The images they have prepared all expire at some point in the future but they release new ones right before the next expiration date.  Usually every six months.  The installs are also lean, so, there is nothing installed to mess up your testing.

Thoughts?

And before you start asking about why you can't install Windows Virtual PC on a Windows 7 machine, go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtua … nload.aspx

This will allow you to install Virtual PC in XP Mode and whatnot.

VirtualBox is far better than VPC...
Anyway,
Virtual PC 2007 SP1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … laylang=en
That is the last version before the invention of the new VPC/XP-mode for W7 and *capable* CPUs.

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

One good way to run earlier IE on Windows 7 is VMware ThinAPP. Check out the video in the following post and you might be amazed of what you can do with that.

I hope this help,

Re: Windows 7 x64 - IE6 crashes every time

I am having the same issue with Windows 7x64 Enterprise with SP1 and trying to use the "New IE6" or the "New IE 5.5" options. ALL of the other options work fine.
The version or IE Tester I am using is 0.4.11

I am testing an applicaiton that requires IE6, and will not work with IE5, IE7, IE8, or IE9.

Please let me know if you have reseached this issue and have an suggestions.

I am using a physical computer, not a virtual computer.

By the way, doing the following within IE9 DID NOT fix the issue:

Internet Options -> Connections  tab -> LAN Settings -> uncheck : Automatically Detect Settings

The error message I receive says:

IE Tester has stopped working, close the program.

Thanks,

KJ
